What items are guests NOT allowed to bring?

The Bren Events Center is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all patrons. Safety protocol will include a walk-through metal detector screening along with a standard bag check for all attendees prior to entering the facility. For security purposes, all bags are subject to search prior to entry for any event. Only clear bags will be permitted with a maximum size of 12"x12"x6" — the size of a one-gallon freezer bag.

    • Bags, backpacks, large purses, etc., are no longer permitted with the exception of bags  carried for medical reasons or manufactured diaper bags that accompany infants and young children.

    • Alcohol
    • Animals, with the exception of trained disability service animals
    • Artificial noisemakers
    • Bags, backpacks, large purses
    • Bottles, Cans or Coolers
    • Devices that amplify sound (including bluetooth speakers)
    • Flash Photography
    • Glass
    • Outside food or beverage
    • Professional Cameras
    • Sealed or wrapped packages of any kind
    • Selfie Sticks, monopods, tripods or telescopic devices
    • Signs larger than 20" x 24"
    • Video recording devices
    • Weapons

Tickets

Tickets are required for all guests. All guests over the age of 2 will need their own ticket. Children who are under the age of 2 and can remain on an adult's lap for the duration of the ceremony do not need a ticket. If a child or baby occupies a seat of their own, they will need a ticket.

All Commencement ceremonies have assigned seating. Section, row and seat location is specified on each individual ticket.

Tickets are limited and must have been reserved in advance by the graduate.

Guests must obtain tickets from their graduate PRIOR to the graduate’s ceremony line- up time. Guests are not allowed in the graduate check-in and line-up area. Tickets are not available at the door, nor will any be held for guest pick-up.

Your graduate will need to print copies of their reserved tickets to distribute to their guests prior to entering the graduate check-in and line-up area.

    • If guests need to change their tickets for accommodation reasons, please visit the Ticket Box Office before the ceremony to exchange the current guest tickets for accommodation seating. The box office will open for this service one hour before the ceremony start time.
    • If guests need to change their tickets FROM accommodation seating due to no longer needing the accommodation seating, please visit the Ticket Box Office before the ceremony to exchange the current guest tickets for non-accommodation seating. The box office will open for this service one hour before the ceremony start time.
    • Please note that space is limited and day of ticket exchanges will be based on availability.

What time should guests arrive?

Family and guests should plan to arrive at the Bren Events Center at least 75 minutes before the event to allow ample time for parking or traffic congestion. Guests will also be required to go through a security check before entering the venue.

Directions & Parking?

The ceremony takes place at the Bren Events Center on the main UC Irvine campus. Please see the Directions & Parking page for directions and additional information.

    • Parking on the UC Irvine campus is complimentary and no permits are needed during Commencement ceremony hours for graduates and their guests. You may use any parking space designated for the Commencement ceremony except those reserved for disabled parking, service vehicles, and vehicles with “X” permits.

Accessible Parking and Mobility Assistance

Disabled/elderly parking for ceremonies held in the Bren Events Center will be located in the Mesa Parking Structure and parking lot 14A. Traffic directors will be available to guide drivers needing accessible parking.

Drop-Off Area

Disabled/elderly passengers may be dropped off in designated areas near the Bren Events Center.

Do I need to reserve a disabled/elderly parking spot?

No. Guests should inform the parking attendant upon arrival at the parking structure of any assistance needed.

Guests should not contact UC Irvine Parking & Transportation to request a disabled parking space.

Guest Services

Ushers are located throughout the venue and can provide guest assistance such as:

A variety of concessions are available inside the venue. Outside food or drink, other than a water bottle, are not permitted.

Ceremony length

The ceremony is expected to be under 2 hours, depending on the number of graduates. 

Guests should designate a place to meet their graduate after the ceremony - the plaza will be crowded with guests and graduates exiting multiple areas of the facility!

Out of respect for the graduates and their guests, attendees are asked to remain for the duration of the ceremony.

International guests

The Commencement Office is unable to provide invitation letters to assist guests in obtaining visas to attend their graduate's ceremony.

    • Graduates can write their own invitation letter for their guests. The International Center encourages graduates to also obtain an enrollment verification from the Office of the Registrar.
    • UC Irvine does not write these letters, nor are they required by the U.S. Consulate. For additional information, please contact UC Irvine’s International Center.

Digital Commencement Program: list of graduates

The Commencement Program lists the names of all qualified students who applied on time for graduation. The digital program will be available online starting December 16th.
