Students who will earn a degree during the 2021-2022 academic year – Summer ’21, Fall ’21, Winter ’22, Spring ’22 (or who expect to complete their degree requirements during Summer ’22) – are eligible and welcome to participate in Commencement and celebration events.

Graduate students

Graduate students who earned a degree during Fall ’21, Winter ’22, Spring ’22 (or who expect to complete their degree requirements during Summer ’22, Fall '22) – are eligible and welcome to participate in Commencement celebrations.

All Master’s candidates (except for M.F.A. candidates from Claire Trevor School of the Arts and the School of Humanities) participate in joint school celebrations with baccalaureate candidates. 

Ph.D, D.N.P., and M.F.As participate in the Graduate Hooding Ceremony.

Application for graduation

All undergraduate students must complete an Application for Graduation online at StudentAccess by the deadline set by your school. Application for Graduation deadlines occur throughout the year.
Submit your application, then schedule a grad check with your Academic Counselor (not required for some majors).

Academic regalia, caps & gowns and tassels

To participate in Commencement, the Grad Hooding ceremony and school-based celebrations, all graduates must wear appropriate academic regalia.

Members of religious orders or commissioned U.S. military officers may wear their customary habit or dress uniform.

Purchase your cap and gown from the UCI Alumni Association.

Online ordering begins April 18. Early online orders can opt-in to pick up their regalia at Grad Expo April 26-29. 

Caps & gowns are not available for purchase on Commencement day.

Sashes and stoles: UCI graduation sashes and stoles representing UCI organizations or proclaiming a vocational aspiration may be worn with cap and gown. Wearing multiple stoles is permitted.

Recognitions of achievement and affiliation: Recognition cords, pins and medals awarded by UCI organizations and academic departments may be worn with cap and gown.

Ticket reservations

Tickets are required for all guests at Commencement and celebration events. Children 2 and under do not need a ticket. However, they must sit on a lap and not take a seat.

Tickets are limited and must be reserved in advance by the graduate.

Deadline for graduating students to register for Commencement and celebrations and receive tickets is April 15.

Each graduate must download and print their own guest tickets for their ticketed event(s). Registered graduates will receive information for downloading their tickets in May.

UCI graduates participating in Commencement and celebrations do not need a ticket for themselves but must register to participate in the Commencement ceremony and celebration. 

Graduates will check in and receive a Name Card at lineup prior to their celebration.

Downloading tickets
Graduates who register in April to participate in Commencement or Celebrations, will receive email directions on how to download their guest tickets in late May. Instructions will be slightly different for each venue.

Pre-order Commencement Flowers

Commencement Flowers will have booths where you can purchase flower and lei gifts for your graduate before each celebration at the Bren Events Center and at Angel Stadium.

Order ahead. To pick up your order, give your name at one of Commencement Flowers booths in front of the Bren Events Center and Angel Stadium.

Digital Commencement Program

The Commencement Program lists the names of all qualified students who applied on time for graduation. 

The digital program can be viewed on the Commencement website starting June 10.
Diploma name
If your diploma name needs to be changed, please contact the University Registrar. You may submit a Request for Name Change to ask that your name to be changed on university records by May 2022. The form is also available at the University Registrar’s office. All diplomas will reflect the exact name on your student records.

Guest entrance

Face coverings are REQUIRED for all attendees inside the Bren Events Center. All guests need to have a ticket for entrance. Guests should plan to arrive early to allow ample time for parking and to clear all public health and safety checks prior to entrance. 

Doors open 1 hour prior to the event time at the Bren Events Center.

Please review "what to expect" below to prepare for what to expect upon your arrival and to be familiar ahead of time for what is not allowed at the event.

Graduate lineup

Graduates are required to line up in their appropriate location 90 minutes (one hour and thirty minutes) prior to the start time for all celebrations.

This allows time to check in, clear security, make final review of your graduation regalia, find friends to sit next to and line up for the processional. Be sure to give tickets to your family/guests prior to your line-up time.

What to expect

Face coverings are REQUIRED for all attendees inside the Bren Events Center.

Graduates will be seated after the platform party processional. Speeches will be given and each graduate will be called forward to be recognized and congratulated by the dean of their school. There will be a recessional to exit the celebration, after which graduates will be able to greet family and friends. 

Designate a post-event meeting place with your family and guests prior to your arrival at the line-up area. Graduates will not be allowed to leave early from the celebrations. Each celebration will last 1.5 to 2 hours.

The Bren Events Center is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all patrons. Safety protocol will include a walk-through metal detector screening along with the standard bag check policy for all attendees prior to entering the facility. Guests should plan their arrival accordingly to allow ample time for the screening process.

To expedite entrance into the venue, guests are asked to limit the amount of bags and items brought through the security process. This will help the process go quickly.

In accordance with Bren Events Center and UCI policies, the following items are NOT permitted:

  • Alcohol
  • Animals, with the exception of trained disability service animals
  • Artificial noisemakers
  • Bottles, Cans or Coolers
  • Flash Photography
  • Glass
  • Outside food or beverage
  • Professional Cameras
  • Sealed or wrapped packages of any kind
  • Selfie Sticks, monopods, tripods or telescopic devices
  • Signs larger than 20" x 24"
  • Video recording devices
  • Weapons

For security purposes, all bags are subject to search prior to entry for any event.

How long is each school/college celebration?

School/college-based celebrations will be approximately an hour and 45 minutes, depending on the number of graduates.

Guests should designate a place to meet their graduate after the celebration!

General event program:

  • The event begins with the processional.

  • After a short program, each graduate goes on stage as their name is read.

  • Graduate is shown on the screens above the stage as they cross the stage and take a photo with the Dean or other dignitary.

  • Professional photographs are taken as the graduate is congratulated.

  • The event ends with a recessional.

Name cards to be used at celebrations

Graduating students will receive a printed name card at lineup before their celebration. The name card is used to participate in the graduate's school celebration and help track their photos on stage.

Upon reaching the stage, graduates give the name card to the announcer and the graduate’s name is read and displayed on screens above the stage as they are congratulated and photographed.

Graduate photographs

Professional photography will be provided at all school celebrations and the Graduate Hooding Ceremony at the Bren Events Center. Graduates will be photographed before arriving at the stage, and when they shake the hand of their dean or other dignitary.

Picture proofs are emailed approximately 5-7 days after the celebration to the email address on the name card.

Bren Events Center policies

COMMENCEMENT DAY AT ANGEL STADIUM

Guest tickets

Be sure to give guest tickets to your family and guests prior to your ceremony line-up time. 

All guests over the age of 3 must have a ticket for entrance to Commencement at Angel Stadium. Re-entry is not allowed. Guests will not be allowed to re-enter once they exit the gates.

Guests cannot enter the graduate line-up area.

Graduates are required to be in the graduate check-in line by 1:30 p.m. for Commencement at Angel Stadium. The processional at Angel Stadium will start at 2:45 p.m. (45 minutes before the ceremony start time) to allow graduates to be in their seat by 3:30 p.m.

Be sure to give tickets to your family/guests prior to your line-up time.

What to expect

Guests should stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. 

Parking will be complimentary for all graduates and their guests. 

Gates open at 1:30 p.m. 

The processional of graduates will begin at 3 p.m. to allow for all graduates to be seated for the start of the ceremony.

The ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. and is expected to end by 5:30 p.m.

Fireworks will conclude the event and graduates will exit the venue to reunite with their guests. 

The Commencement ceremony will be a united celebration for all of our campus graduates to get together, sit in seats on the field and listen to celebratory speeches. Graduates names will not be read and graduates will not cross a stage at this event. There will be multiple photo opportunities for graduates to capture the moment with their friends in line-up and with their guests around the stadium.

How long is the Commencement Ceremony at Angel Stadium?

The Commencement ceremony will be approximately 1.5-2 hours.

Guests should designate a place to meet their graduate after the ceremony!

General event program:

  • The graduate processional will be pre-event- starting at 3 p.m.

  • Graduates will be in their seat on the field before the event start time- 3:30 p.m.

  • Graduates and guests will hear remarks from Chancellor Gillman, our featured speaker and additional guests.

  • Degrees will be conferred by Chancellor Gillman.

  • Ceremony will end between 5-5:30 p.m.

  • Graduates will NOT have their name read or displayed at this event.

  • Graduates and guests will have photo opportunities after the event in several locations around the venue.

Name cards

Graduates will not cross a stage and will not have their names read at Angel Stadium. Therefore, no name cards will be used for the Commencement ceremony at Angel Stadium.

Graduate photographs

Professional photographers will be on-site to capture the overall excitement of the Commencement ceremony at Angel Stadium, which will be shared on university social media channels. Individual graduate photos will not be taken during the ceremony, but several selfie stations will be located throughout the stadium for grads and their guests to utilize.

 

Angel Stadium policies

Angel Stadium bag policy

Bag Policy
In an effort to enhance public safety, Angel Stadium prohibits all bags, backpacks and other carriers from being brought into the stadium with the following exceptions (in each case, after proper inspection):

  • Purses or bags that are 12" x 12" with a single zipper closure/flap or smaller
  • Clear bags (plastic or vinyl) with no obscured interior pockets that do not exceed 12.75" x 6.5" x 12.75"
  • Medically necessary items, including diaper bags

Other than the above-noted exceptions, all other bags must be returned to the patron's vehicle. No backpacks.

STADIUM RULES

  • Tailgating is not permitted.
  • No outside food is allowed inside the stadium.
  • No alcohol is permitted anywhere on the premises, including the parking lot and inside the stadium.
  • Each guest will be allowed to bring in one factory sealed plastic water bottle up to 16.9 ounces or one empty water container.
  • No confetti, air horns or balloons.
  • Strollers are not permitted inside the stadium.

Ceremonies will take place in all conditions. Consider weather conditions, such as sun exposure, heat, and rain. Take appropriate precautions related to weather protection.

Attire should be appropriate for walking and sitting outdoors for two hours as well as climbing stairs and/or ramps within the stadium.

Diplomas

Diplomas will be available 3 to 4 months after degree requirements are completed.

Make sure your permanent address remains up to date after you graduate. Log in to StudentAccess to update.

Grads will be notified via email when diplomas can be picked up at the University Registrar’s office. Arrangements may also be made with the Registrar for diplomas to be received by mail.

Diploma frames and other display options are available at the The Hill's booths during the ceremonies and afterward at the store.

Photo proofs

Professional photography will be taken at all school celebrations. Grads will be photographed before arriving at the stage, and when they shake the hand of their dean. Packages will be available for purchase. Graduates will receive photo proofs about 5-7 days after their celebration.

StageClips

Your special moment on stage will be captured by our official video partner, StageClip. Your StageClip captures the moment you cross the stage during your school celebrations. Your StageClip is designed for download to your mobile device and can be easily shared on your social networks. You will be emailed after your celebration has taken place to notify you when your clip is available on the StageClip website. You can also search for your clip within the website using your celebration date and time. This video clip is a gift from the university and is provided to you at no cost. Don't forget to tag your StageClip using the official Commencement hashtags! #UCIPRIDE and #UCIGrad

Please note, footage may also be used by UCI for media publications and advertising. Commencement and school celebration footage will be archived for future reference.
