Undergraduates

Students who will earn a degree during the 2020-21 academic year – Summer ’20, Fall ’20, Winter ’21, Spring ’21 (or who expect to complete their degree requirements during Summer ’21) – are eligible and welcome to participate in the virtual Commencement and receptions.

Graduate students

All Master’s candidates (except for MFA candidates) participate in school/college ceremonies with baccalaureate candidates. 

Ph.D.s, D.N.P.s, and MFAs participate in the Graduate Hooding Ceremony.

Application for graduation

All undergraduate students must complete an Application for Graduation online at StudentAccess by the deadline set by your school. Application for Graduation deadlines occur throughout the year.

Submit your application, then schedule a grad check with your Academic Counselor (not required for some majors).

Register to participate in the virtual Commencement

Graduates must register to participate in the virtual Commencement ceremony and receptions. Graduates will register on the commencement website when registration begins in April. Each school/college will be assigned a specific date and time for registration to open starting April 12.  All schools/college registration will close on April 30 at 5 p.m. PDT. Graduates can register anytime between the opening and closing date. There is no need to register right when it opens.

Submit graduate information to StageClip
Graduates who register to participate in the virtual commencement will be given more instructions on how to submit information for their graduate slides after registration closes. Graduates will not submit slide information during the initial registration process.
Register to participate in the Graduate Stage Moment

Graduate Stage Moments will take place daily from June 13-17, from 8 a.m.-7 p.m.

Graduates will be able to reserve one spot during any available 15 minute reservation. Reservations will not be set by specific school or degree for our undergraduate and master’s degrees.

The entire experience is expected to take about 30 minutes from arrival to the end of the celebration. This is not a seated program.

Registration will open on Tuesday, May 11. Graduates will receive an email from UCI Commencement with a link to register and select a specific available time frame via Qualtrics.

Academic regalia, caps & gowns and tassels

To participate in in-person Commencement celebrations, all graduates must wear appropriate academic regalia.

Members of religious orders or commissioned U.S. military officers may wear their customary habit or dress uniform.

Sashes and stoles: UCI graduation sashes and stoles representing UCI organizations or proclaiming a vocational aspiration may be worn with cap and gown. Wearing multiple stoles is permitted.

Recognitions of achievement and affiliation: Recognition cords, pins and medals awarded by UCI organizations and academic departments may also be worn with cap and gown.

Digital Commencement Program

The Commencement Program lists the names of all qualified students who applied on time for graduation. 

The digital program can be viewed on the Commencement website starting mid-June.

 
Diploma name
If your diploma name needs to be changed, please contact the University Registrar. You may submit a Request for Name Change to ask that your name to be changed on university records by May 2021. The form is also available at the University Registrar’s office. All diplomas will reflect the exact name on your student records.
Senior Class Gift

Watch the Virtual UCI-wide Commencement and Receptions

No registration or passcodes are needed to VIEW the celebrations. 

The university-wide Virtual Ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. PDT and will be broadcast on the Commencement website home page. The ceremony will be viewable at the top of the home page. The ceremony will include remarks from Chancellor Howard Gillman, Vice Chancellor Willie Banks Jr. and UCIAA Board President Jack Toan, as well as the official conferring of degrees.

After the university-wide ceremony, click on the name of the reception you would like to view when it is time for the receptions to begin (approx 9:30 a.m. PDT). 

Receptions will be listed on the home page below the university-wide ceremony video. Receptions will include remarks from the deans. Graduates who registered to participate will be recognized with their name displayed and read during the individual receptions. If graduates submitted a photo and written message, those items will be video displayed as well. 

Receptions will last anywhere from 45-90 minutes.

Share your StageClip!

We have partnered with StageClip to gather information from our graduates for their virtual reception slide. After graduates register to participate in the virtual Commencement, they will receive a link from Stageclip that will allow each graduate to submit a photo, written message and short video clip. The photo and written message will be displayed on the graduate’s slide during the reception. The video clip will not be included in the virtual reception. 

However, all submitted information will be included in each graduate's personalized keepsake Stageclip. Your StageClip will include your slide and video submission. It is designed for download to your mobile device and can be easily shared on your social networks. 

You will receive an email after the virtual Commencement, receptions and Graduate Stage Moments have concluded to notify you when your personalized clip is available on the StageClip website. You can also search for your clip within the website using your graduation date and time. This clip is a gift from the university. It is provided to you at no cost. Don't forget to tag your StageClip using the official graduation hashtag! #UCIPRIDE and #UCIGrad

AFTER THE CEREMONY

Diplomas

Diplomas will be available 3 to 4 months after degree requirements are completed.

Make sure your permanent address remains up to date after you graduate. Log in to StudentAccess to update.

Grads will be notified once diplomas become available. Currently, diplomas are only being mailed out. If there is a change, the University Registrar will update their webpage with more information.

Diploma frames and other display options can be purchased online at The Hill.

Photo proofs
Professional photographers will be present to capture the moment graduates cross the stage for those that would like to purchase a commemorative Commencement photo.
