Undergraduates

Students who will earn a degree during the 2016-17 academic year — Summer ’16, Fall ’16, Winter ’17, Spring ’17 (or who expect to complete their degree requirements during Summer ’17) — are eligible and welcome to participate in Commencement ceremonies.

Graduate students

All Master’s candidates (except for M.F.A. candidates from Claire Trevor School of the Arts and the School of Humanities) participate in joint school ceremonies with baccalaureate candidates.

Application for graduation

All students must complete an Application for Graduation online at StudentAccess by the deadline set by your school. Application for Graduation deadlines occur throughout the year.
Submit your application, then schedule a grad check with your Academic Counselor (not required for some majors).

Academic regalia, caps & gowns and tassels

To participate in Commencement ceremonies, all graduates must wear appropriate academic regalia.

Members of religious orders or commissioned U.S. military officers may wear their customary habit or dress uniform.

Purchase your cap and gown at UCI Alumni Association’s GradExpo May 2-5, 2017 at UCI Newkirk Alumni Center.

Caps & gowns are not available for purchase on Commencement day.

Sashes and stoles: University of California, Irvine graduation sashes and stoles representing UCI organizations or proclaiming a vocational aspiration may be worn with cap and gown. Wearing multiple stoles is permitted.

Recognitions of achievement and affiliation: Recognition cords, pins and medals awarded by UCI organizations and academic departments may be worn with cap and gown.

All family and guests attending school ceremonies in the Bren Events Center require tickets.*

Tickets are limited and must be reserved in advance.

Deadline for graduating students to register for school Commencement ceremonies and receive tickets is April 14 at 5 p.m.

GUESTS MUST HAVE TICKETS FOR ENTRY.*

Each graduate must download and print their own guest tickets for their school ceremony.

UCI students participating in School ceremonies do not need a ticket.

Graduates will receive a Name Card at lineup on Commencement day.

*Guest tickets are not required for Graduate Hooding and The Paul Merage School of Business ceremonies.

Commencement Program & diploma name

The commemorative Commencement Program lists the names of all qualified students who applied on time for graduation. 

A coupon for one complimentary copy of the Commencement Program will be given to each graduate and must be presented to receive a free copy. Coupons may be redeemed at The Hill, UCI's bookstore. Additional copies may be purchased at Commencement ceremonies or at The Hill starting June 13 for a nominal charge.

If your diploma name needs to be changed, please contact the University Registrar. You may submit a Request for Name Change to ask that your name to be changed on university records by May 2017. The form is also available at the University Registrar’s office. All diplomas will reflect the exact name on your student records.

Family and guest tickets
Be sure to give guest tickets to your family and guests prior to your ceremony line-up time.
Graduate lineup
Graduates are required to line up in their appropriate location one hour prior to the start of their school ceremony.

This allows time to make final checks of your graduation regalia, find friends to sit next to, and to line up for the processional. Be sure to give tickets to your family/guests prior to your line-up time.

What to expect

Graduates will be seated after the platform party processional. Speeches will be given and each graduate will be called forward to be recognized and congratulated by the dean of their school. There will be a recessional to exit the ceremony, after which graduates will be able to greet family and friends. 

Designate a post-event meeting place with your family and guests prior to your arrival at the line-up area. Graduates will not be allowed to leave early from the ceremonies. Each celebration will last 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the number of graduates.

In accordance with Bren Events Center and UCI policies, the following items are NOT permitted:

  • Balloons
  • Coolers, bottles and/or alcoholic beverages
  • Smoking
  • Pets (except trained service dogs)
  • Strollers in the arena area
  • Outside food or beverage
  • Flash photography
  • Airhorns, boom sticks and artificial noisemakers
  • Signs larger than 20" x 24"
  • Weapons

Video recording is allowed.

For security purposes, all bags are subject to search prior to entry for any event.

Name Cards

Graduating students will receive a Name Card at lineup before the ceremony.

Name Cards are completed by graduates during lineup. The Name Card is used to walk in your school celebration.

Upon reaching the stage, graduates give the Name Card to the announcer and the graduate’s name is read as they are congratulated and photographed.

Graduate photographs

Professional photography will be provided at all school ceremonies. Grads will be photographed before arriving at the stage, and when they shake the hand of their dean.

Picture proofs are emailed a few days after the ceremony to the email address on the Name Card.

This is an important day for Anteaters, their families and invited guests. Your courtesy and respectful decorum are appreciated.

AFTER THE CEREMONY

Diplomas

Diplomas will be available 3 to 4 months after degree requirements are completed.

Make sure your permanent address remains up to date after you graduate. Log in to StudentAccess.

Grads will be notified via email when diplomas can be picked up at the University Registrar’s office. Arrangements may also be made with the Registrar for diplomas to be received by mail.

Diploma frames and other display options are available at the The Hill (UCI’s bookstore) at their booths during the ceremonies and at afterward the store.

Photo proofs

Photo proofs will be mailed to the address on the name card within one week after the ceremony. Photographs may be ordered directly from the photographer, GradImages, either by mail, phone or through their website: www.gradimages.com. All questions regarding the photography of graduates as they cross the stage should be directed to Grad Images at 800-424-3686.

You may pre-register your email and up to 6 email addresses of friends and family who would like to share in your accomplishment by viewing and ordering your photos. Photo samples will be quickly and conveniently provided to you and all others registered as soon as they are available after your ceremony. Pre-register at GradImages.

UCI email accounts

UCI Office of Information Technology (OIT) terminates access to student email accounts within three months following Commencement ceremonies. All files, email and address books left on the server will be deleted. Incoming email will not be forwarded.
